What Makes a Superfood Super?

Superfoods. Seems to be the it word at every health food shop, raw cafe and coming out of every health advocate. But what is it about superfoods that make them so super?!

The term “Superfoods” refers to types of foods which are thought to have a very high content of certain nutrients, making them exceptionally worthwhile to include in our diets. Typically these food sources are high in antioxidants and essential nutrients – nutrients our bodies can’t produce.

Some benefits of consuming superfoods:

  • Help regulate metabolism and burn body fat.
  • Protect organs from toxins.
  • Lowers cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Prevent or reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Prevent heart disease and cancer.
  • Promote digestive health.

Some commonly known superfoods include:

  • Acai – richer in antioxidants than most berries
  • Goji berries – boosts immune system and protect the eyes
  • Quinoa – complete protein comprising of all 9 essential amino acids
  • Kiwi fruit – high in Vitamin C and low in sugar, great for weight loss
  • Chia seeds –  high in fibre, excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Maca – increase energy, stamina and regulate hormonal balance

Of course this isn’t an exhaustive list, and it’s not to say that other fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be consumed. We believe everything in moderation provides for a balanced holistic life. But keep a look out for those superfoods next time you’re in your local health foods shop or supermarket and see what amazing things they can do to your health!
